I recently purchased a new thermometer for my Pecos BBQ smoker. Although I did really well in my first BBQ competition in the Summer, I didn’t do well at all in my second, the Clarksville BBQ Bash. After doing an after-action report on myself, I realized that poor fire and temperature management was the culprit. The thermometer wasn’t calibrated properly therefore I was cooking at a temp that wasn’t hot enough.
All the hard work in the world will not produce good results if your current work is not calibrated to a standard. We define calibration as “to adjust precisely for a particular function.”
That’s for a smoker. What about for our professional and personal development?
I’ve chosen RECALIBRATE for my 2022 word of the year. COVID radically changed our business model and since it seems we’re not going to be done with the virus anytime soon, it’s important I refocus everything we do to meet the new reality. We were properly calibrated for in-person learning. We made adjustments to survive, but now we need to shift for the current reality and near future.
I’m also thinking about RECALIBRATE for my personal growth. Spending time with my grandkids last weekend made me think about how to relate back to young children since ours are all grown and out of the house. RECALIBRATING how I might better spend what time I have left on the planet. I have to RECALIBRATE to whatever new dynamics will be there.
What about you? The chances of life returning to what it was in 2019 are slim. Your old goals might not be relevant anymore. Rather than stay focused on the past while hoping for a return to that past, why not think about how to attack our new reality?
A new year is just around the corner. Why not commit to making this one your best ever? Take some time this week to think about new goals, plans, ideas, and dreams? Then, adjust what you need to in order to meet them. That’s my plan. Why not join me?
