If you know me, you know that two people were instrumental in my development. No, it wasn’t mom and dad or even a teacher. I was inspired by Greg Nelson, but I’m driven by Jon Davies.
Greg Nelson was one of my first Bosses way back in 1986. He pushed me to be a better version of myself and pulled me out of the career rut I was in and lit a fire under me. That fire continues to burn today. To learn more about this, check out Boss Builder Podcast episode #29 for my interview with him. I would say Greg Nelson inspires me.
Jon Davies was one of my last Bosses back in 1996. He was the clinic director I worked for and each and every day working for him was one of misery. He turned my inspiration to be a better version of myself into just simple survival. He doesn’t know this, but on October 11, 1996 I nearly took a swing at him. To learn more about this, check out Boss Builder Podcast episode #1 where I talk about this. But on that rainy October morning, I figured out what I wanted to do with the rest of my life: create the next generation of Great Bosses, which I’m working on today. I would say that Jon Davies drives me.
Inspired or driven. Both are important and one isn’t better than the other. One puts you on the path and the other fuels your journey. Inspiration doesn’t always have to be positive and driven-by doesn’t have to be negative. It’s just a matter of figuring out where you want to go and what you want to do and how to get there.
This week, do a little inventory and see if you can identify the person or even that inspires you. Do the same thing as you think about what/who drives you. Plug into that power if you haven’t done so already and get busy.
And, if you’re The Boss, think about what you’re doing (or not doing) to drive or inspire those around you. I think all of us want to be memorable. Are you? For the right reasons???
