“Nothing productive will happen between the manager and a direct report without trust.” —Margi Bush

As the Boss, you have been setting the stage of building trust the past few days by showing your direct reports that value and respect their perspectives.

As you move closer to becoming an Established Partner with your direct reports, trust will matter more and more for your team’s success.

There are four things that we see as very important in building trust:

  • Competence:Your competent technical skills most likely got you promoted to a manager. Now you must be competent in the skills for growing and developing your people. Providing feedback and coaching and know the difference between the two.
  • Integrity:You must have the ability to be fair and honest and provide feedback to your direct reports, even hard feedback. Avoiding feedback positive or tough feedback leads to lack of trust.
  • Confidence:You must have the confidence to rely on your direct reports to do the work that you as the manager were previously responsible for doing. Relying on direct reports to accomplish the work builds as sense of ownership and increases trust.
  • Safety:You must provide an environment where direct reports can speak up without fear of reprimand and they can make mistakes and you will still have their back.

We wish you a week of Being a Great Boss.
