Whoa!!! 2023 is here. I can’t believe the holidays are behind us and we’re already into the New Year. We packed up the Christmas décor today and have just a few holiday goodies left.
“This week,” my wife says, “We’re going on a SERIOUS diet!”
Not sure when “WE” decided this, but I guess I don’t have a vote.
This is normally the time most of us try to do a restart. Our Word of the Year is REBOOT and a reboot is a restart.
We define REBOOT as: It’s not changing what you have. It’s using new insights.
Statistics suggest most of us will fail with resolutions. Some, like us, have opted for a Word of the Year instead. That gives us guidelines rather than rules. It’s still not going to be easy though.
We do however have a fighting chance if we follow two rules:
- Make your changes slowly.
- Create space by stopping some old habits before adding new ones.
Over the next month I’ll offer some suggestions on four habits I’m considering. They are:
- Reading
- Walking
- Mindfulness
- Curiosity
These are some things I’m already doing occasionally, but I see the value in making them a priority. And some of them come after I ditch some old habits to create space.
I’ll review these with you, give you some suggestions on why they are important, and offer up some strategies that I’ll be following.
The new year is a great time for a reboot. I’m excited for what this year will bring, and I hope you are too.
Ps. The title of this series comes from one of my favorite Hank Williams Jr. albums which is entitled Habits Old and New.
