As the Boss, it’s up to you to determine if your direct reports are open to partnering with you to address gaps in performance and work through career development.

As you move closer to becoming an Established Partner with your direct reports, you’ll want to understand what coachability looks like and what a coaching culture might look like that will support a direct report that is coachable.

Let’s start with coachability. We are looking for a direct report who demonstrates:

  • A sense of curiosity of how they show up and how their actions and behaviors impact the team
  • Willingness to manage their defensiveness when receiving feedback and coaching
  • A learner who wants to grow and develop
  • Is open to accountability for agreed upon actions

As the Boss, it is also important to create and support a coaching culture:

  • Willingness to tolerate mistakes (when appropriate)
  • Recognize the link between coaching and improved performance
  • Knowing the performance cycle should not punish time of learning

All of this will require you to transition between telling and controlling to asking open questions, listening and holding direct reports accountable.

We wish you a week of Being a Great Boss.
